Math Camp August 22, 2016
This past week dinosaurs and young scientist could be found roaming the halls of Oaklyn. Close to 100 students participated in the annual Math Camp during the week of August 15. The camp provided students in grades K-5 with investigative experiences that integrated math and science concepts. The theme of this year's camp was dinosaurs.
New Dismissal Procedures August 31, 2016
With the many changes in transportation district wide, Oaklyn will be trying a new procedure for dismissal. Parents picking up their children in grade K-3 should report for 2:50 and students in grade 4 - 5 at 2:55 pm.
Our first buses are schedule to arrive at 3:00 pm. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT CARS ARE NOT BLOCKING THE BUSES FROM ACCESSING THE SCHOOL GROUNDS. PLEASE DO NOT PARK YOUR VEHICLES ON CORNERS OR GRASSY AREAS OF THE SCHOOL OR NEIGHBORING RESIDENCES. ALSO PLEASE EXIT PROMPTLY AFTER PICKING UP YOUR CHILD.

The Brain Show September 19, 2016 The PTA is once again sponsoring the Brain Show at Oaklyn. There will be 2 showings during the day on September 27 for students. A family night will be held that same evening beginning at 6:30 pm. Please check the PTA webpage or Facebook page for more information.
Halloween Festivities There will be some changes to our Halloween festivities this year due to it being an early dismissal day. Weather permitting, students will parade outside the school beginning at 9:30 am. A Halloween party will follow in each classroom from 10:00 - 11:15 am. Only those parents that have made prior arrangements with the room parent and have clearances on file will be permitted to help in the classrooms.
Girls on the Run September 28, 2016 Girls in grades 3 -5 have the opportunity to participate in this program that promotes self confidence and physical fitness. The program provides activities that teach the girls how to deal with conflict, make good choices and feel good about themselves. School Wide Positive Behavior Support - SWPBS October 3, 2016 Oaklyn is implementing a school wide positive behavior support program this year. Our expectations are for students to be respectful, responsible and safe during all aspects of their school day. Teachers spent time over the first few weeks of school, teaching students how to act according to our school's expectations. Students that show behaviors above and beyond are rewarded with a Brave Buck. These rewards can be used to purchase school items in the PTA School Store that is opened monthly. The store contains items that students can use in school. Also each grade will hold a celebration every 4-6 weeks for students that have earned Braves Bucks during this timeframe. Mr. Hoffman's 4th grade students made posters of the positive expectations to display in the hallway. One poster is pictured below. Mrs. Fasold's 1st grade class recently held a dance party and Halloween activity to celebrate all students in her class receiving a Braves Buck. The store will open its doors for the first time on October 13th and students that have earned 3 Braves Bucks will be permitted to shop that day.
Fire Prevention Week October 11, 2016 Students at Oaklyn Elementary participated in several activities to increase their awareness of fire safety. Fire trucks and volunteer fire fighters from the Good Will, Friendship, and Sunbury Steam Companies visited the school. Students were able to climb on the trucks and learned about the fire safety gear and equipment. Firefighters demonstrated how the "Jaws of Life" is used at accident signs by cutting through metal cans. Students also watch a video on safe tips to follow in the event of a fire in their home. Our students particularly enjoyed practicing "Stop, Drop and Roll". Each student receive a water bottle topped with a fire helmet, compliments of the volunteer fire departments.
Braves Bucks Store - Big Success! October 19, 2016 The grand opening of the Braves Bucks Store was a big hit. Students that have earned at least 3 rewards from our Positive Behavior Support Program were permitted to shop at the store. Some items that were available for purchase included pencils, notebook, journals, art kits, puzzles, markers, paints, pencil cases, T-Shirts, and pizza or slushy coupons. Anyone wishing to donate items for the store can contact the PTA or our office. Unity Day October is National Bullying Prevention Month. In an effort to build awareness against bullying, Oaklyn students participated in Unity Day. Students wore orange to show their true colors when it comes to showing their support for students who are bullied. The goal of this day is for students to work together against bullying and to be united for kindness, acceptance and inclusion. Minion Pumpkins Mrs. Brown's 2nd grade class was given a donation of pumpkins. The students decided to put the pumpkins to good use with a special art project. Working with art teacher, Mrs. Landau, the students transformed their pumpkins into Minions! OES 5th Grade Students Compliment Their Classmates October 20, 2016The Best School Year Ever by Barbara Robinson is a great book to read. This book is about a family named the Herdmans and how much trouble they cause. The school that the Herdmans attend is Woodrow Wilson Elementary School. The Herdmans go to school when they want and do whatever they want. In the beginning of the school year, their teacher, Miss Kemp, assigns a project called Compliments for Classmates. This project changed Imogene Herdman and in the end you see that the Herdmans aren't a bad family. I liked when Louella takes Howard to school and Imogene ends up giving her blanket to Howard when he loses his. The author's point during the story is that even if someone is mean to you, you should be nice to them. Being nice goes a long way. I would recommend this book to another reader because it's a really good book to read. I guarantee you will be laughing your head off. Written by Megan Strohecker
Halloween Fun November 1, 2016 Oaklyn students celebrated Halloween by parading around the school campus in costume. Students were then treated to Halloween snacks and games.
    
The Pillowcase Project November 7, 2016 Students in grades 3 - 5 participated in the American Red Cross Pillowcase Project. The American Red Cross knows that teaching children how to prepare for emergencies can help keep their families and communities safe when emergencies happen. The Pillowcase Project started in New Orleans, where students used pillowcases to carry their belongings during a hurricane emergency. Now the Red Cross is distributing pillowcases to children across the country and teaching them how to stay safe in a wide variety of emergency situations. Through the Pillowcase Project, children learn how to prepare for emergencies, practice what they have learned, and share their knowledge with family and friends, so that, when an emergency occurs, everyone in your family knows what to do and how to help each other stay safe.
Each student in grades 3-5 were given a pillowcase to make a Pillowcase Emergency Kit. Some suggested items to keep in the kit include bottled water, soap, flashlight, change of clothes, toothbrush and toothpaste, portable radio, paper and pen, blanket, first aid kit, and batteries. Mock Election November 9, 2016 Students in Miss Olson's 5th grade Social Studies classes planned and held a Mock Election at Oaklyn. The students prepared registration cards for every student in the building, made ballots, assisted voters, decorated the polling site and tallied the votes. Donald Trump was the victor. The experience gave students the opportunity to practice their civil duties as they will in adulthood. Veteran's Day Activities November 11, 2016 Second graders at Oaklyn Elementary School had a special visit on Veteran's Day, November 11th. Donald Rouse, father of Oaklyn student Wesley Rouse, spoke to the students about his service in the Marines and the Army. He told stories from his time deployed and spoke of his love for our country and the importance of serving our nation. The students thoroughly enjoyed seeing his uniform, model tanks, and having a question and answer session.
Second and third grade students also performed their annual Veteran's Day program under the direction of Mr. Frank Delucca. Students sang patriotic songs and wrote letters to honor our veterans and to thank them for their service. Holiday Painting of Store Fronts November 16, 2016 Art teachers Christina Landau and Ryan Albertson accompanied a group of 5th grade Shikellamy students to paint store fronts in Sunbury for the holiday season. Students spent the day making the downtown more festive. The students had a great time doing something they enjoy and having the opportunity to meet fellow 5th grade students from other elementary buildings. Thank you to Dominoes for providing lunch and to the parents that volunteered to help supervise the students. Pictured below are some Oaklyn students painting the town!
MANNERS BREAKFAST November 21, 2016 Students in Mrs. Leaven's class recently strengthen their social skill by learning how to use their manners. Student performed activities to help them understand how to politely act in public and treat other people. The students were able to practice their skills during a Manners Breakfast. Staff cooked breakfast for the students, giving them an opportunity to use their "Please" and "Thank You". Thanksgiving Feasts! November 23, 2016Various Thanksgiving activities took place at Oaklyn. Students in first grade dressed as pilgrims and Native Americans and were served a feast with all the trimmings. The fifth grade students feasted on foods from the first Thanksgiving. Squirrel, rabbit, duck, venison, fish, clams, squash and many other delicacies were on the menu. Thank you to all the parents that donated food and helped to serve our students.  
 Science In Actions November 30, 2016
Mrs. Phillips' second grade class conducted an experiment using the scientific method. Students applied the steps of the scientific method by asking a question, forming a hypothesis, planning and carrying out procedures, recording results, and forming a conclusion. The scientists observed raisins dropped in soda and used their scientific reasoning to decide what made the raisins dance!
Compound Word Day Second grade students recently had some fun after learning about compound words. Each student made a T-Shirt displaying their favorite compound words. The students also played games and other activities to test their knowledge of compound words.
Holiday Food Drive December 21. 2106Our students conducted a food drive this holiday season. Students were asked to donate nonperishable foods to be donated to a local food pantry. Additionally, the kindergarten and first grade students brought in food items, hats and gloves for their giving tree. Over 500 items were donated to the First Reform Church of Sunbury to help stock their food pantry. This community service project is an annual event in our school and helps to teach our students to give back to our community. Thank you to all who participated and to Mrs. Garinger for transporting the donate food to the church.
Holiday Activities December 22, 2016 Students and staff were busy with many holiday activities. Mr. Delucca conducted yet another entertaining holiday performance with our 4th and 5th grade students. Santa visited all our students and they received a very generous gift from our PTA. Classroom parties were held with students singing, playing games and enjoying holiday treats. Thank you to all the parents, PTA members and staff that helped to make the holiday season joyful!
Pennies for Patients - Working for a Cure February 8, 2017 Students at OES are working to help fight cancer by conducting a Pennies for Patients drive during the month of February. Students were provided with boxes to collect and donate coins. A PJ Day will be held on 2/10 in which students can donate $1 and wear their PJs to school. Lastly, students can provide and additional donation and have their name written on a blood drop and display on our Cure Cancer wall in the cafeteria. Classes that collect the most will be treated to a pizza party. Donations from all activities will be given to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Students in Mrs. Ake's 5th grade reading classes recently completed movie trailers as an end of novel project. Students chose a section of the movie to film, edit and create a trailer. Weis Promotes Healthy Eating February 8, 2017 Kathryn and Erin from Weis Market did a healthy eating presentation for second grade students at Oaklyn School. They talked about the 5 food groups, healthy food vs unhealthy food and the importance of exercise. The students were detectives and had to find various information on food labels. The students took home a cookbook for kids and information for their parents.
B.U.G.S. Awards February 24, 2016 The Kiwanis Club and Representative Linda Schlegel Culver recently recognized 3rd grade students that have improved their grades. Students having improved averages in any subject and no decreased averages were awarded with a certificate, pin and pencil. Representative Culver set a challenge to the students for the remaining marking periods. The class having all students improved grades will be treated to a pizza and ice cream party.
READ ACROSS AMERICA MARCH 2, 2017 Oaklyn was buzzing with activity today in recognition of Dr. Seuss' Birthday. To celebrate Read Across America, students read stories, ate green eggs and ham and created crafts for their favorite Dr. Seuss book. The Priestley Forsyth Memorial Library brought the Cat in the Hat to visit with students in grades K - 2.
Iditarod March 12, 2017 Second grade students have been studying the Iditarod. Each student chose a musher and mapped their progress through the race. Students also learned about the history of the race and the life of each musher. Reading Buddies March 28, 2017 Fifth grade students work to strengthen their reading fluency by reading to kindergarten students. Each morning, groups of students fifth graders can be seen reading to our kindergarten students.
Spirit Week!!!!!!!! March 28, 2017Oaklyn Elementary is having Spirit Week as a way to have some fun and relax for the upcoming PSSA testing. Students and staff dress to a certain theme that ties in with a test taking strategy. At the end of the week, a PSSA Pep Rally will be held. Students and faculty will compete in Minute to Win It games. A video highlighting students dancing and a song parody with encouraging messages will be played for the students. A big thank you to Mrs. Vovakes, Mrs. Boetsch, Mr. Pratt and the high school chorus for helping making the video possible!

K'Nex Challenge March 28, 2017 Oaklyn had a team of 5th grade students recently compete in the K'Nex STEM Challenge at the CSIU. Their task was to build an eco-friendly amusement park ride. Our team place in the regional competition earning them a berth to the state competition next month. Team members include Blaze Souders, Aiden Tressler, Jayden Weldy, Kaden Gold and Justen Campbell. Miss Olson served as the team coach.
Jump Rope For Heart April 17, 2017 Oaklyn students recently participated in the American Heart Association Jump Rope For Heart. Their efforts allowed for a donation of $3,745 to AMA. The event helps to raise awareness about heart-healthy living and provide funds for lifesaving scientific research and critically needed education efforts. We thank Mr. Baney for organizing this event and for the generosity of our students and families. Job well done!
Girls on the Run April 20, 2017 It was a very busy week for the Oaklyn Girls on the Run team. The girls partnered with the JROTC to clean litter and debris from the school grounds in recogniation of Earth Day. The girls also participated in a community service project. Their project involved raising funds to provide a donation to the Miles for Macy fund. The girls raised $200 buy selling baked goods and potted flowers.
Science Fair April 21, 2017 Students in grade 4 recently held a science fair at Oaklyn. Students were asked to identify a problem and apply the scientific method. The fair had two categories - scientific problem or recycling. Student displayed their information on tri-fold boards. Students in grades K-5 toured the science fair listening to our 4th grade scientists explain their project and answer questions. The Science Fair was opened for a public viewing and was very well attended. We would like to thank Mr. Hoffman for initiating this inquire-based learning experience for our students. Also, a thank you to the PTA for supporting the event.

Pinpoint Credit Union Coloring Contest April 24, 2017 The Pinpoint Credit Union sponsored a "Give a Hood About Savings" coloring contest. The purpose of the contest was to stress the importance of saving money. The contest was held as part of Credit Union Youth Month. The winners at Oaklyn were second grade student Cameron Marlow and fourth grade student Gwen Weist. Each student received a monetary award.
Outdoor Education Camp - And They Are Off !!!!!!!!!!!!!! May 1, 2017 Oaklyn and Chief 5th grade students are off on a memorable adventure at Camp Mt. Luther. Students will spend the week taking on outdoor activities, learning team building skills and making lifetime memories.
